Executive summary: High-temperature superconductivity

German physicist J. Georg Bednorz graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in 1982, and was hired by IBM's physics lab in Zurich. He was assigned to help K. Alex Mller, who had been his doctoral advisor, in his quest for superconductivity (disappearance of electrical resistance at extremely low temperatures) at higher critical temperatures, and in 1986 they showed that a compound of lanthanum, barium, and copper oxide that had a critical temperature of 35 K (-238C), substantially warmer than the norm for superconductivity in other materials. In 1987, just five years after earning his PhD, Bednorz was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics, shared with Mller. Since then Bednorz has studied phase transitions, quantum ferroelectricity, metallic conductivity, and development of high Tc superconductors.
