He worked as cargo manager for Israel's El Al Airlines, then spent several years managing a Florida cruise line. With financial backing from billionaire Meshulam Riklis, he launched the Carnival cruise line in 1972 as a subsidiary of Riklis's American International Travel Service, and in 1974 he bought out Riklis's interest in the cruise line. Over the next decade Carnival became the dominant cruise line, largely due to the popularity of TV's The Love Boat, and Arison became one of the world's wealthiest men.
In 1983 he purchased Ensign Bank, a New York thrift, and seven years later it was declared insolvent and liquidated by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). In 1988 he provided financial backing as majority owner of the Miami Heat, an NBA expansion team, and in 1995 his family took active control of the franchise. In 1990 Arison renounced his American citizenship to avoid paying taxes and resettled in Israel, where he spent the rest of his life. In 1997 he purchased a controlling interest in Bank Hapoalim, the largest bank in Israel. He died in 1999. Father: Meir Arison Wife: Mina Wasserman Arison (m. 1948, div.)
