Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Scientist, Doctor Nationality: Sweden Executive summary: Oxidation enzymes Swedish biochemist Hugo Theorell was awarded the 1955 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for "his discoveries concerning the nature and mode of action of oxidation enzymes." He devoted his entire career to enzyme research, building a long rsum of scientific accomplishments: He was the first to obtain crystalline myoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen and is found in red muscle. Working with Nobel laureate Otto Warburg, Theorell discovered a bright yellow enzyme in yeast, and later determined that it was composed of two parts: a non-protein coenzyme (the yellow riboflavine phosphate) and a protein apoenzyme. He was the first to isolate peroxidase (found in horseradish) and lactoperoxidase (found in milk), and the first to comprehensively describe how ADH enzymes break down alcohol in the kidney. He also developed an early blood-alcohol test used for many years, predominantly in Sweden and West Germany, to measure the sobriety of suspected drunk drivers.
His wife Margit was a professional pianist, and Theorell himself was an accomplished violinist. They both served for many years on the board of the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
