Active in the Communist Party and the resistance movement, he was arrested by Nazis and imprisoned at Buchenwald during World War II. After the war he became an acclaimed author, best known for his autobiographical novels Le Grand Voyage and Quel beau Dimanche, and an outspoken advocate of freedom and peace. He was twice Oscar-nominated, for his screenplays for La Guerre est Finie (The War Is Over) and Z. He was Spanish Minister of Culture from 1988 to 1991.
