His single San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair) (1967), written by John Phillips, reached #4 on the Billboard 100. The song had been intended as a throwaway to promote the Monterey Pop festival that year, but became an unexpected anthem. His career faltered, and not very much of McKenzie's music is remembered. With two original members, he toured with a revived The Mamas and the Papas in the mid 1980s, and additionally he co-authored Kokomo (1988) for the Beach Boys, which reached #1. Since about 2010 he was suffering the effects of Guillain-Barr Syndrome, a nervous disorder.
