Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Astronomer, Mathematician Nationality: Germany Executive summary: Mbius strip German astronomer and mathematician August Mbius studied under Carl Friedrich Gauss, and wrote about theoretical astronomy, projective geometry, and topology. He introduced the Mbius function of combinatorics, the Mbius inversion formula and Mbius transform in number theory, and the Mbius transformation used in projective geometry. He was most known in his time as an astronomer, but he is remembered for describing the properties of a two-dimensional surface with only one side, now called the Mobius band or strip, and usually represented as a flat strip of paper with a half twist brought together as a continuous, single-edged loop. Another mathematician, Johann Benedict Listing (1808-1882), independently discovered the same concept a few months earlier, but Mbius' work was published first. He was a direct descendant of Martin Luther, on his mother's side.
