Four European expatriates are hired to deliver a cargo of nitroglycerine to an oil well fire in a difficult-to-reach South American region, without the usual protections such a cargo requires; the men are down on their luck and were selected on one criterion only -- none would be missed should catastrophe befall. Won the Grand Prix at Cannes and the Goldener B�r at the Berlin International Film Festival. Arnaud's novel was later remade by William Friedkin as Sorcerer (1977).
