OK.. For you "purists," there are several historical errors in the film. There were TWO lion mascots in the excadrille: Whiskey and Soda. There actualy was a black pilot that flew for the French in WWI but he was not in the Lafayette Escadrille. The only all red Fokker Triplane was flown by the Red Baron, Manfred Vov Ritchoven. The Nieuport 17 had been withdrawn from the front by the time the Triplane arrived. But, the rest of the show was stunningly accurate! This was the best WWI air combat film I've ever seen... and I've seen them all. The only other one that comes close was Wings (1927). It is worth it to get the DVD Collectors' Edition, two-disk set, just to listen to the director's commentary in the background. If you're any kind of aviation enthusiast, this film is well worth the viewing. Dick Starks The Dawn Patrol of Kansas City www.kcdawnpatrol.org
