Investment bank founded 1850 by brothers Henry, Emanuel, and Meyer Lehman.

Merged in 1977 with Kuhn, Loeb & Co., making Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb. That firm was subsequently acquired by American Express in 1984. Several mergers later, Lehman Brothers was spun off once again in 1994.

Filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 15 September 2008.
